Préludes poétiques

collection, pub:1827, action:1818

From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed:
This is a MS. Collection of verse wholly in Dumas' handwriting, written out for, and presented by him to, Mme. Mélanie Waldor. It consists of 150 pages, large 8vo., on Whatman paper bearing the watermark of 1819, and bound in violet morocco, with three gold rules on the cover and gilt edged. It is titled on the back : "Préludes Poétiques.—Alex. Dumas," and on the cover: " Mme. Waldor" in gold lettering.
The first two pages are blank, the third bears the title : "Préludes Poétiques, par Alex Dumas," and the following epigraph :—
"Dans la femme qu'on aime est tout notre génie." (l)
On the final fly-leaf Dumas has written the twelve lines which form the epigraph of his "Comment je devins Auteur dramatique," they being an extract from his verses "À Toi" (which latter, strange to say, if we are to believe M. Édouard Fournier, was written for another fair lady).
The body of the work comprises the following 16 pieces, of which all but a couple are among his most familiar poetical efforts. In some cases the titles have been changed, and M. Glinel has noted a number of variants in almost every case.
