Canaris

vers/verse, pub:1826

Poetry in dithyramb. Published in the third issue of La Psyché.

From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed:
Seventeen irregular stanzas, comprising in all 112 lines. These are prefixed by an epigraph of three lines of verse by Casimir Delavigne.
First published : Paris, Sanson, 1826, 12mo., pp. 10; frontispiece and portrait of Canaris, lithographed by L. Jolly ; printed by Sétier. It was sold for the benefit of the Greeks.
This dithyramb was also published in "La Psyché," May, 1826, with a number of variants carefully listed by M. Glinel in his MS. collection of Dumas' poems.
"Canaris" was dedicated to Casimir Delavigne, but with the omission of the epigraph, in the MS. album "Préludes Poétiques," forming the fourth piece, and occupying pages 37 to 46. In this version, too, there are a number of variations. In the two printed texts and the MS., Glinel indicates eighteen.
     M. Glinel reprints the text of "La Psyché" in his "Alexandre Dumas et Son Œuvre," pp. 151 to 155.
