From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed: Two regular four-line stanzas, rhyming alternately.
An autograph manuscript, of which the text was supplied to M. Glinel by the Vicomte de Spoelberch de Lovenjoul. It was signed Alex. Dumas, and dated "Venice, 14th January, 1860."
Dumas published it in the third of his four Causeries entitled "Comment je mis Garibaldi." Almost certainly this was printed in L'Indipendente." Later it was given in "Le Monte-Cristo," in the instalment of "Une Odyssée en 1860" for the number dated January 17th, 1862.
Mr. R. S. Garnett has given an English rendering on page 12 of his edition of the "Memoirs of Garibaldi," to which these four "Causeries" referred to serve as an introduction.
