First appeared in an article on "Sappho" in "Le Monte-Cristo," the number for January 7th, 1858, page 181.
Article and verses alike were reprinted in "Les Étoiles du Monde;" Paris, Garnier Frères, 1858, the verses appearing on pp. 294 and 295.
This poem was also published in "L'Artiste" for July, 1876.
In his article, both in the journal and in the volume, Dumas supplies the previous renderings of these verses by Boileau and by Delille, with both of which he expresses dissatisfaction.
