From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed: A translation from the English of Water's "Stories of a Detective." The title-page plainly states : "Publiés par Alexandre Dumas ; traduits par Perceval," yet it has been credited to Dumas, whose only apparent connection was a ten-line recommendation to Cadot the publisher.
Original edition: Paris, Cadot, 2 vols., 1859 (according to Thieme, 1907). There is also an edition in small 18mo., 1 vol., Paris, Cadot (N.D.).
Dumas' prefatory note probably locates the date. "Le Mousquetaire," he says, is defunct, or he would have used the material there ; one may therefore infer that Cadot received it in the eleven-week interval before "Le Monte-Cristo" began to be issued, since this last is not referred to.
