From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed: With his usual good nature Alexandre Dumas had been persuaded, rather against his better judgment, to touch up this play by a certain Madame Meynier of Marseilles. She intended, and expected, to see his name beside her own on the play-bills, but Dumas refused, and for once was adamant on the point, even with a lady concerned, and this in spite of tears, entreaties, vexation and anger. Thus then, although the lady took feminine revenge by making some little scandal, and broadcasting the information of the assistance which she had received, the piece was performed under her pseudonym alone of Max Bourdon.
It was first performed during February, 1868.
