From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed: One notices under this year, as having been produced by Anicet Bourgeois, in conjunction with Dumanoir and Brissebarre, a piece by the above title, which, one feels assured, can hardly have been other than suggested by a famous incident in Dumas' "Les Trois Mousquetaires. "
First performed : Vaudeville Theatre, June 23rd, 1845, and resumed in September of the same year. Its first appearance was a benefit for General Tom Thumb.
Original edition : Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, 1848.
