From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed: In this "open letter" Dumas states that he was about to offer himself as a candidate for La Gironde, but learns that Thiers and Girardin are standing, for which reason he withdraws in their favour. It bears the date of May 28th, 1848.
