From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed: A verse drama in five acts, with an epilogue.
Announced and signed by Jules Lacroix alone, there are ample proofs that Dumas had a very large share in its composition. In the Library of the Royal Academy of Belgium is a copy of the first edition with the whole first act appended in Dumas' handwriting, in prose. Dumas refers to the great trouble he had with the Comédie Française regarding this piece. In a letter to the associates, dated the day before the first performance, he asks, as the senior, that his name be placed first. What then happened to prevent his name appearing in connection with this piece at all is not known.
First performed at the Théâtre Français on the 10th of November, 1849.
Original edition : Paris, Firmin Didot Frères,—Tresse,—Michel Lévy Frères, 1849.
Now included among the plays of Jules Lacroix ; Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 3 vols. First issued in 1875.
