From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed: A collection of six biographical articles, entitled successively : "Napoléon Bonaparte," "Le Général Bonaparte," "Bonaparte, Premier Consul," "Napoléon Empereur," "Napoléon à l'île d'Elbe et les Cent Jours," and "Napoléon à Sainte-Hélène." Quérard only mentions four of these.
These were first written for and published in "Le Plutarque Français," edited by M. Mennechet; Paris, Imprimerie Crapelet, 1836, 8 vols., large 8vo., with full-length portraits.
Either these articles were added to when published alone, as one of Dumas' works, or they were then differently arranged, for the original edition comprises eight headings: "Napoléon de Bonaparte," "Le Général Bonaparte," "Bonaparte Premier Consul," "Napoléon Empereur," "Napoléon à l'île d'Elbe et les Cent Jours," "Napoléon à Sainte-Hélène," "Gouvernement de Napoléon," and "Testament de Napoléon."
Original edition (as a separate work) : Paris, "Au Plutarque Français," 17 Rue Duphot, and by Delloye, 13 Place de la Bourse, 1840, large 8vo., pp. 410 and table of contents, with 12 full-length portraits. (These details are from the "Trésor du Bibliophile Romantique et Moderne : 1801 à 1873," from a catalogue of the Hôtel Drouot, and from a copy in the Reed Dumas Collection.) On the other hand, Quérard says : First edition, Paris, Delloye, 17 Rue Duphot, 1839, I vol., 8vo., "pp. 256.
It now forms one volume in the standard Calmann-Lévy edition. In Le Vasseur's "Alexandre Dumas Illustré" it forms part of Vol. XVIII. Neither of these contains "Gouvernement de Napoléon."
