From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed:
A prose drama, in five acts and nine tableaux.
Dumas says it was translated from Schiller, but comparison of the French and German versions reveals that much more than a translation was the result. As he did with "Fiesque" (see page 18), he modified, softened crude or flamboyant passages, transposed and gave a decidedly improved result, while following the main progress of the plot closely. Gautier acclaimed it as an almost perfect version of the original, but he is not very accurate in that. It had a great success.
Maquet had a share in the rights of this play, in liquidation of previous debts, but distinctly denied any part in its composition.
First performed at the Théâtre Historique, June 11th, 1847.
Original edition : Lévy "Bibliothèque Dramatique," 1847.
It now forms part of Vol. VII, of the 15 Vol. edition, and of Vol. X. in the 25 Vol. series of Calmann-Lévy.
