From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed: On the 3rd of October, 1846, Dumas, an invited guest, set out with several of his friends to attend the wedding of the Duc de Montpensier with a Spanish princess. This work is the record of the earlier portion of his travels on that occasion.
The expedition was almost a triumph ; Dumas was at the height of his fame (incidentally he left five of his best romances in abeyance as serials while he journeyed), and the resulting works are usually considered to be the high-water mark of his "Impressions de Voyage." They are written in the form of letters addressed to a lady (Glinel suggests Suzanne Brohan).
First appeared serially in "La Presse."
Original edition : Paris, Garnier Frères, 5 vols., 8vo., 1847-1848 (Bibliothèque Nationale).
It forms two volumes in the standard Calmann-Lévy edition, and one in the same firm's "Musée Littéraire."
In Le Vasseur's "Alexandre Dumas Illustré" it is in Vol. XXI.
