L' Île de feu; Le médecin de Java

Doctor Basilius

roman/novel, pub:1860, action:1847-

From A Bibliography of Alexandre Dumas père by Frank Wild Reed:
A work in an unusual style for Dumas, indeed, with the possible exception of "Les Mariages du Père Olifus," it is difficult to mention anything approximating quite to it. One naturally asks who was the collaborator here, and Mr. Garnett is probably correct in suggesting Dumas' life-long friend, Joseph Méry. The scene is laid in Java, with a touch of the supernatural underlying all. Period 1847—.
There is some uncertainty about its first publication, but in some form or other it must have appeared in or before 1860, since the Reed Dumas Collection contains an English translation of that year (London, Routledge).
Original edition : Brussels, Collection Hetzel, 3 vols., as "Le Médecin de Java" (N.D.) — ? 1859?
First French edition, as "L'Ile de Feu; " Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, 2 vols., 1870 (Thieme).
As "L'Île de Feu " it now fills two volumes in the Calmann-Lévy edition.
In Le Vasseur's "Alexandre Dumas Illustré" it is in Vol. XXIII.

         English Translation :—
"Doctor Basilius;" London, Routledge, l2mo., pp. 431, 1860. It has been reprinted, but is scarce.
