“Lend Me a Tenor”

C. Conrad Cady and Tim Hart in Lend Me a Tenor
Tim Hart, right, and C. Conrad Cady, left, are in the Chanticleers Theatre production of “Lend Me a Tenor.”

This screwball comedy, capably produced by Chanticleers Theatre, presents the backstage antics that accompany any stage production — especially a Ken Ludwig production. The entertainment-lawyer-turned-writer specializes in anxiety-laced slapsticks in which the zany characters endure impossible dilemmas so that the show-within-a-show will go on.

Verdi's “Otello” is the opera at the center on “Tenor,” and its success depends entirely on the renowned Italian tenor Tito Merelli (C. Conrad Cady). Tito is known for his drunken and womanizing off-stage behavior, as his jealous wife Maria (Reneé Racan) reveals.

But the true star in “Tenor” is Max (Tim Hart), the opera house stooge who gophers for company owner Saunders (Robert Rossman).

Tightly directed by actor/playwright Robert Hamm, the Chanticleers actors exhibit impeccable timing, which is crucial for effective slapstick.

The entire cast is exceptional, including the stargazing bellhop (Dan Garfinkle), opera co-owner Julia (Angela Galli) and the sexy leading lady Diana (Brenda Lamberty).

“Lend Me a Tenor” may be light and predictable fare, and even a transparent script, but this ensemble delivers with entertaining and hilarious results.

“Lend Me a Tenor” continues through June 5 at the Chanticleers Theatre, 3683 Quail Ave., Castro Valley. Shows are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $10 general admission, $8 for students and seniors. Call 510-SEE-LIVE (733-5483)
